International Medical/Dental Mission Work

DR. VIRDEE’S INTERNATIONAL MISSION WORK

Dr. Virdee grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, a developing country where a large majority of the population lives under the poverty line, with limited access to important resources such as health care, clean water and medicines.  After becoming an orthodontist, Dr. Virdee dedicated herself to volunteering and caring for children and adults across the globe as a mission dentist.

Dr. Virdee was recently featured in the Sudbury Star as well as Northern Life Magazine for her volunteer work with cleft lip and palate patients in Peru.  Take a look at some of the photos from Dr. Virdee’s international mission work and read her blog to find out more.  Dr. Virdee volunteers her time on a regular basis to provide dental care to the less fortunate or to those who have limited access to care.  Her patients include special needs cases such as cleft lip and palate patients.

Medical/Dental Mission to Peru, June 2015

In June 2015, Dr. Virdee traveled to Cusco, Peru with Medical Missions for Children.  Dr. Virdee worked along side surgeons, paediatricians, nurses and one other dentist to give care to patients with cleft lip and palate and other special needs.  We have put  some photos up for you, but you can more about this mission in her blog.

Dr. Virdee Peru Cleft Lip and Palate Mission

Dr. Virdee and Dr. Micheal Oldenburg get a patient ready for surgery. This patient already had her cleft lip repaired when she was approximately 2 years old. The surgeons did a secondary lip repair to reduce scaring and Dr. Virdee took out some decayed baby teeth.

This is a photo of the medical team in the OR. Dr. Virdee extracted 12 teeth on the 2 year old patient that was on the operating table after he had his cleft lip repaired by the surgeons.

Dr. Virdee holds Willy, one of her favourite patients in Peru. In this photo, Willy was being seen on screening day, when the doctors determine if patients are healthy enough for surgery. Dr. Virdee also gave some oral hygiene instruction to Willy’s parents to prevent decay in the future.

This young patient is a few months old. He had a cleft lip and palate. The surgeons repaired his lip early so he an suckle and get adequate nutrition. When he is a little older, he will be ready for his palate (roof of the mouth) to be repaired.

Medical/Dental Mission to Bangladesh, February 2015

In February 2015, Dr. Virdee travelled to Chittagong, Bangladesh with Rotaplast International on her first cleft lip and palate mission.  In addition to caring for these patients in the OR, she also saw other patients in need of treatment in the out patient clinic.  Several of these patients included burn victims.  Since reconstructive surgery and dentistry are the most expensive and inaccessible health care streams in Bangladesh, the services that were provided to the people of Chittagong were life changing.  We’ve included some photos for you below, but you can read more about this mission in Dr. Virdee’s blog.

In addition to treating burn victims, the Rotaplast team also treated many burn Victims. Shiro is one of them. She was burned by a kerosene lamp at a young age but could not afford treatment. As a result, her skin contracted but her jaw continued to grow. Plastic surgeons took a skin graft from Shiro's hip and used it to release the tension around her skin. Shiro was able to close her mouth for the first time in 14 years.

Dental Mission to Chuuk, Micronesia, October 2014

Chuuk, Micronesia is an archipelago with mountainous islands surrounded by a string of islets on place close to the barrier reef.  An island where everything from fruit to meat to dairy is imported, the people of Chuuk have very limited access to dental care.  Dr. Virdee joined Caring Hands to Mouth to provide dental care in the form of fillings, extractions, and cleanings to the Chuukese people.  Some photos are shown below.
