Lower Lingual Holding Arch

22 Sep 2017, Posted by admin in Uncategorized

When there is early loss of baby teeth in the lower arch Dr. Virdee might recommend something called a  Lower Lingual Holding Arch.  We use this often in Mississauga / Sudbury patients who are in their mixed dentition (have lost some baby teeth but still do not have all of their adult teeth yet).  This is a temporary retainer appliance which is placed to hold the molars in place and prevent them from drifting forward.

The reason we do this is baby teeth are much larger than adult teeth. If we are able to preserve the space we can use it to help treat crowding in the adult permanent teeth as they erupt.  This can help prevent the need for extractions later on and allow the permanent teeth to erupt better.

This appliance has two bands on the adult molars and a passive stainless-steel wire that touches the inside (lingual) service of the lower teeth.

While undergoing treatment with this Lower Lingual Holding Arch we recommend you avoid sticky chewy foods and gum.  You can brush your teeth and floss as normal taking extra care to clean your appliance as well.  Speech usually improves within a couple days as you adjust to the appliance.
