Orthodontic Treatments

At Hometown Orthodontics, we make a commitment to introducing some of the latest, state-of-the-art technologies that have sound, scientific backing in treatment effectiveness and safety.  Propel is a new system that we are pleased to offer our adult patients. Propel uses a patient’s own biology to accelerate tooth movement and stimulate bone regrowth surrounding the teeth. Patients will finish their treatment with exceptional results in less time and with fewer treatment visits.

Propel can complement conventional braces or Invisalign.  The results show that tooth movement is accelerated by up to 50%.  This means you can be in and out of treatment in no time at all!

How does Propel Work?

In both our Sudbury and Mississauga offices, Dr. Virdee will first take an x-ray to determine the space between the roots of your teeth.  These are the areas in the jaw bone that tiny dimples, or microosteoperforations are made. After numbing your gums with a local anaesthetic (just like they do at the dentist), we use the Propel device to make 1-3 tiny, pre-measured holes through your gums and into the underlying bone around the teeth that need to be moved.  Any bleeding is minor and generally stops before you leave the office.

How does Propel speed up orthodontic treatment:

1. The tiny dimples, or holes that are made make with Propel make the bone pliable and make it easier for teeth to move into the desired position with braces or Invisalign
2. The bone responds to the dimples by increasing blood flow. This encourages bone regrowth in the space left behind as the tooth moves to its desired position, quickly restoring jawbone strength.

With this minor procedure, orthodontic treatment time can be reduced by up to 50%.  This technology isn’t new, as we have always taken advantage of bone remodelling to help with tooth movement.  In fact, when a patient needs extraction treatment due to excessive crowding, we normally have tooth extraction completed just as we are ready to start closing space.  Because the extraction spaces leaves a “hole” in the bone, the bone is more pliable and because there is increased blood flow to this site as the extraction socket heals, teeth in an around the extraction spaces move faster.

Am I a candidate for Propel?

Anyone who is a candidate for orthodontic treatment is a candidate for Propel.  Patients with traditional braces, clear aligners such as Invisalign or lingual or hidden braces or any other type of orthodontic device who want to speed up their treatment times can ask for the Propel process.
