It is an exciting time when your braces finally come off – however this is also the most critical stage of your treatment. You will most likely be getting a wire on the lingual (tongue side) of your top and bottom teeth. This will help to prevent your anterior teeth from moving after you have completed orthodontic treatment.
This is put on your teeth very much like how the braces were put on. The metal wire is glued on to your teeth with a special dental adhesive. You may notice a bit of an adjustment period as your tongue gets used to the wire. Any discomfort or speech issues caused by tongue obstructions typically resolve themselves within a couple of days.
You need to brush your retainer just as you would your regular teeth to ensure it stays clean. Brush your teeth (on your tongue side) more carefully, and floss your teeth with a floss threader (or super floss) to keep your teeth and retainer free from plaque. Avoid biting into hard foods that put more force on your front teeth, it is always advisable to use your side teeth to chew.
Dr. Virdee and her staff in Port Credit/Sudbury will show you how to properly take care of your new retainer to ensure your smile stays perfect for life! However, it is ultimately your responsibility to be aware of changes to your fixed retainer – please give us a call and let us know and we can bring you in for an appointment.
After you get your braces off you will also get a set of removable retainers. These retainers will be worn either full time or night time wear only and this will be decided by Dr. Virdee based on each individual patient.
When you first have your braces removed they will take an impression of your teeth. The dental molds will than be used to make casts to fabricate your retainers. These retainers are made using a clear material that hug your teeth.
The Pro’s to this type of retainer is that it looks invisible and most people find it very comfortable to wear. To keep your retainer clean you can always dip it in mouth wash and clean it with a soft toothbrush. Remember to not clean your retainer in hot weather as this will cause distortion making your retainer no longer fit.
